Article about Noroxin

Norfloxacin is a bactericidal ingredient used in human medicine in certain broad-spectrum antibiotics and belongs to the group of so-called gyrase inhibitors. Noroxin and other representatives of this group of active substances kill bacteria by inhibiting their enzyme gyrase. Preparations which mainly or exclusively contain norfloxacin are u. at. used to treat acute urinary tract infections (eg cystitis).

What is Noroxin?

Due to its effect and other properties, norfloxacin is an antibiotic, the substance of which achieves its effect by inhibiting the bacterial enzyme gyrase. This is vital for bacteria because it is primarily responsible for what is called DNA supercoilling.

Noroxin therefore belongs to the class of active principles of gyrase inhibitors. The closely related antibiotics, levofloxacin and ofloxacin, are also part of this class of active substances. In addition, norfloxacin also belongs to the class of fluoroquinolones.

Preparations containing Noroxin as an active ingredient are prescribed to treat acute or chronic urinary tract infections. The colorless to pale yellow active ingredient is usually prescribed as film-coated tablets and taken orally by the patient. In chemistry and pharmacology, norfloxacin is described by the empirical formula C 16 - H 18 - F - N 3 - O 3. This corresponds to a moral mass of 319.33 g / mol.

Pharmacological effects

Noroxin has a strong bactericidal effect. It follows that it kills infectious bacteria in a targeted and effective manner. Typical of the drug class of gyrase inhibitors, norfloxacin causes inhibition of the enzyme gyrase. It is a protein produced by the infectious bacteria themselves. You need it to shape the spatial orientation of your DNA.

Due to the immense importance of gyrase for DNA supercoiling (circular DNA design), bacteria are not viable after being inhibited. They can no longer reproduce and die.

Since Noroxin is particularly effective against bacteria that cause urinary tract infections or gonorrhea (colloquially "gonorrhea"), the antibiotic is mainly used in this area.

The active ingredient is generally used in single preparations (medicines which depend on an active ingredient). Norfloxacin is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It then represents 25% of plasma proteins and has a half-life of between 5 and 7 hours. Due to the material properties of Noroxin, an opioid test may give a false positive result.

Medical application and use

Norfloxacin is considered an antibiotic with a wide range of active ingredients. It is therefore able to kill a large number of different bacteria very effectively. Due to its property as an antibiotic in the class of gyrase inhibitors, Noroxin is used to treat infectious diseases. There is an indication for complicated and uncomplicated, chronic or acute urinary tract infections.

The drug can be used on the upper and lower urinary tract. However, complicated pelvic kidney infections and inflammation of the kidneys themselves (complicated pyelonephritis) are excluded. Because in 2009 the European Medicines Agency and the German Federal Institute for Medicines and Medical Devices changed their risk-benefit assessment so that there is no longer any indication for these diseases. The reason cited was insufficiently demonstrable efficacy in complicated pyelonephritis or renal inflammation.

However, there is still an indication for urinary tract infections that occur as part of surgical or urological procedures. Norfloxacin is also used for kidney stones. Other typical uses of the antibiotic include bladder infections in women, bacterial gastroenteritis and gonorrhea.

Noroxin may also be prescribed to prevent possible blood poisoning which may result from granulocytopenia. Norfloxacin is usually taken by mouth. The antibiotic is sold in tablet form and requires a prescription and a pharmacy.

  • Risks and side effects

Noroxin should not be taken in case of hypersensitivity (allergy) to the active substance. There is also a contraindication to allergies to other drugs of the same class of active substances (quinolo antibiotics, for example levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, ciprofloxacin or ofloxacin). This means that the drug should not be taken from a medical point of view as there is a contraindication.

This is also the case for pregnant women, children and adolescents and during breastfeeding. An application must then be stopped. Even if complications with tendons (especially tendonitis) have already occurred in connection with treatment with quinolo antibiotics, norfloxacin should not be taken.

Noroxin can cause unwanted side effects. However, it is not compulsory. Most treatments have no side effects. Studies have shown the following side effects:

    • Frequently (with one to 10 patients out of a total of 100 patients) there is leukopenia (insufficient number of white blood cells), neutropenia (insufficient number of granulocytes), an increase in function tests hepatic, headache, drowsiness, abdominal pain, nausea and rash. Occasionally (in less than 1 in 100 people), treatment causes crystalluria (crystals in the urine), hemolytic anemia, fatigue, anxiety, nervousness and increased irritability, euphoria (in a good mood), Hallucinations, convulsions and hypersensitivity.
    • Rare (less than 1 in 1000 people treated) are intestinal inflammation accompanied by fever and abdominal pain, as well as inflammation of the Achilles tendon.
    • Very rare (less than 1 in 10,000 people) may develop heart arrhythmias and breakdown of liver cells or muscle tissue.
