Article about Flagyl
Metronidazole is an antibiotic. It is used in medicine to treat and prevent various inflammations caused by certain bacteria, such as clostridia. Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting as well as allergic skin reactions such as redness or pimples are particularly common side effects. Flagyl should not be used in the first third of pregnancy.
What is Flagyl?
Metronidazole is an antibiotic. It is used in medicine to treat and prevent various inflammations.Flagyl is a drug that belongs to antibiotics. It kills anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that live in an oxygen-free environment) and parasites and is therefore often used to treat diseases caused by these bacteria and parasites.
If the diseases are triggered by other bacteria or viruses, for example, it doesn't work. Due to its special action spectrum, the use of metronidazole is only indicated for certain diseases.
The attending physician always decides that. Flagyl is available from different manufacturers under different trade names (including Clont®, Arilin®, Flagyl®).
Pharmacological effects
metronidazole is transformed into an active form by certain bacteria and parasites. This occurs through the rearrangement of electrons (charged particles) in Flagyl by bacteria enzymes.
This changes the properties of the antibiotic. The active form is inserted into the genetic material of bacteria, DNA, and destroys it. In this way, the bacteria's metabolism stops and they die. Metronidazole and its breakdown products are excreted by the kidney. If kidney function is impaired, special precautions should be taken and the concentration of Flagyl in the blood should be observed to avoid unnecessary side effects.
The mechanism of DNA damage also leads to the hypothesis that metronidazole could harm the unborn child in pregnant women. Although it has never been shown in humans, Flagyl should not be taken in the first three months of pregnancy.
Medical application and use
Metronidazole is mainly used to treat diseases caused by so-called anaerobic bacteria, which occur in an oxygen-free environment.
These include, on the one hand, bacterial inflammation of the stomach (then in combination with other drugs) and infections of the large intestine, which are caused by bacteria and, on the other hand , abscesses, that is, encapsulated pus bumps, in the bones, in the region of the teeth, mouth and jaw, in the skin, in the abdominal cavity or in the brain. Another area of application for Flagyl is diseases caused by parasites. These include trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted inflammation of the genitals, lambliasis, diarrhea and amoebic dysentery, diarrhea with cramp-like abdominal pain.
In addition, metronidazole is used in operations on the colon and rectum as well as on the female genitals to prevent inflammation of the wound. For all these purposes, Flagyl is available in various forms, for example as a tablet for oral use, as an ointment, vaginal tablet, suppository or solution for infusion (for administration via the vein).
Like all antibiotics, metronidazole should always be prescribed by a doctor and taken according to the doctor's instructions. The duration of taking is particularly important. It usually does not exceed 10 days, but if taken too short, there is a risk of persistent inflammation and complications.

Risks and side effects
Common side effects from taking Flagyl include gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
When taking metronidazole in tablet form, there is often a metallic taste. Since the active ingredient also has a bitter taste, the tablets should not be crushed. In addition, the urine may turn red, caused by the breakdown products of Flagyl, and has no value for the disease.
Allergic skin reactions such as itching, redness or pustules also occur more frequently. Sometimes headaches and dizziness, sometimes also seizures, lack of coordination and tingling on the hands and feet can occur. Do not consume alcohol while taking metronidazole, because otherwise, particularly serious side effects are to be expected.
