What is Ceftin?

Cefuroxime is a beta-lactam antibiotic that kills bacteria. It comes from the group of 2nd generation cephalosporins. The drug has a wide spectrum of activity and can be used for moderately severe diseases in which there is no danger to life.

Pharmacological effects

Beta-lactam antibiotics are structurally equipped with a special beta-lactam ring which disrupts the formation of the bacterial cell wall. This process ultimately results in the death of germs. Due to the effect of cefuroxime, water enters bacteria cells, causing them to swell and break down.

Ceftin has a particularly good effect against Gram negative rods. This mainly includes the bacterial genus Haemophilus influenzae. In contrast, pseudomonads and enterococci exhibit resistance to the antibiotic. Cefuroxime has excellent stability against beta-lactamases.

Through the mouth, Ceftin enters the gastrointestinal tract, from which it is absorbed by the patient's body. However, it is also possible to transfuse the antibiotic into a vein. The medicine is not broken down. Instead, it is quickly eliminated from the body by the kidneys.

Medical application and use

Cefuroxime is mainly used against infections caused by streptococci because they are very sensitive to antibiotics. These are respiratory infections such as bronchitis or chronic pneumonia, inflammation in the area of the mouth and throat, infections of the ear, nose and throat such as runny nose, infection of the sinus, otitis media or tonsillitis.

Other indications are skin infections, urinary tract infections, kidney inflammation, soft tissue infections, joint infections, bone infections, Lyme disease, blood poisoning (sepsis) or diseases venereal such as gonorrhea (gonorrhea).

Ceftin tablets are taken immediately after a main meal. The tablet should not be broken or chewed so as not to alter the effect of the antibiotic. It is also possible to make a suspension from a dry juice of cefuroxime. For this purpose, boiled cold water is added to the bottle of dry juice. Shake the bottle well. As with tablets, the suspension is taken after a main meal.

It is important to take Ceftin regularly so that the concentration of the active ingredient in the body remains high. A maximum daily dose between 250 and 500 milligrams is recommended for adult and adolescent patients. The patient administers the dose every 12 hours. For children 5 years and older, 125 to 250 milligrams of cefuroxime are provided twice a day.

The duration of the antibiotic administration depends on the patient's illness and its extent. In any case, the patient should not stop treatment too early, otherwise the disease threatens to relapse, because all the bacteria have not been killed. The bacteria can also become resistant to Ceftin.

Risks and side effects

When using cefuroxime, side effects are possible. For example, 1 to 10% of all patients suffer from unwanted side effects such as hives, rash and itching. Breathing difficulties, fever and circulatory problems may also occur.

Allergic reactions appear either immediately after starting treatment, or only a few weeks later. The amount of antibiotic does not matter. In case of allergy, the patient should contact the attending physician and, if necessary, stop treatment.

Dizziness, headache and fungal infections are also possible for up to 10% of those affected. Other side effects include liver dysfunction, temporary changes in blood flow, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bile congestion and jaundice.

If treatment with Ceftin takes longer, there is a risk of infection of the colon by resistant fungi or bacteria, which is manifested by intestinal inflammation with diarrhea.

Cefuroxime should not be used if the patient is hypersensitive to the active ingredient or to another beta-lactam antibiotic. In case of bronchial asthma or allergies, medical clarification is necessary, as hypersensitivity threatens. Ceftin is not suitable for children under three months of age.
