M.genitalium is one of the agents responsible for non-gonococcal urethritis

Reuters Health News Agency Finds New Study Data Confirms Mycoplasma genitalium Infection Rather Common Among Men Seeking Care outpatients with symptoms of non-gonococcal urethritis (NSU). ) These studies are published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Dr. DH Martin (David H. Martin) and colleagues from the University of Louisiana in New Orleans identified the prevalence of M.genitalium infection among 281 men admitted to a clinic for Sexually transmitted diseases in New Orleans, of which 97 men were treated with symptoms of urethritis and 184 men responded negatively to the question of the presence of such symptoms.

In 32 men in the group of patients with symptoms of urethritis and 142 men in the group with asymptomatic infection, the test result for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrohoeae was negative. In the group of patients with symptoms of urethritis with non-chlamydial NSU, M.genitalium was detected in 25%. Unlike the first group, in patients without symptoms of urethritis, the frequency of excretion of M.genitalium was significantly lower and was only 7% (p = 0.006).

The incidence rate of M.genitalium in men with gonococcal and chlamydial urethritis was 14% and 35%, respectively. Patients with Chlamydia urethritis or M.genitalium urethritis were younger and had milder symptoms than patients with gonococcal urethritis.

Previous studies have shown that M.genitalium is resistant to tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones. In this regard, it is necessary to conduct randomized clinical trials to confirm the previously obtained data and the need to develop practical recommendations for the treatment of patients with NSU.
